Dear Esther
What was originally supposed to be a full-game mod for Valve's Half-Life 2 using the Source engine, has now turned into an entire game of its own. Dear Esther was originally released in 2008 as a mod but was picked up in 2009 for a complete art overhaul. The game has been in production since. It eventually reached a point where the developers were able to get a license to create an actual game which will be released on Steam in February for $10.
