The Apostle

I am a little uneasy typing this particular review of the Signs and Wonders movie, "The Apostle". Just because Leeper holds this movie in such high esteem. I hope you are not offended when I say that this movie did not quite move me. I am going to save myself real quick and just say that I am so impressed with Robert Duvall and after this film my respect for the man has increased a considerable amount. However, this film almost put me to sleep. I completely wanted to be there and this could be caused by the fact that I have been gathering very little sleep lately but this particular movie, I felt, was drawn out. To save myself again, drawing films out is a great tool to visualize character development which this story had a great amount. Now that all the negative stuff is out of the way, I do want to commend the movie on several aspects. I absolutely loved the characters, I felt that this pilgrimage of E.F. was applicable to all Christians. I also agree with one of the points brought up in the discussion last night after the movie. The point that Miles Allen brought to the table about that amazing middle ground that Robert Duvall found for his character. That middle ground of the hero of the mock epic being in love with the Lord but being considerably flawed. That was great! Now those are my final thoughts on the film. I guess I correct myself in saying that I was moved a little but in the subject of keeping me engaged, not so much. Thank you for showing us this movie. I'm done.

  1. I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who felt this way! Thank-you so much for being brave and saying this, because now I feel like I can say what I thought, too. I agree with everything you said. I thought it was a bit frustrating to watch because I couldn't comprehend it very well, and it was a bit long and drawn out. But after Leeper did the discussion, it made me appriciate the movie more and I could understand it much better. I also respect Duvall for his perserverance in writing and making this film, especially how long he had to wait until it was produced.
