The Apsotle

    I had the privilege of watching The Apostle last night at 'Signs and Wonders.' The movie was a surprise for multiple reasons. One of which was how Robert Duvall, who I don't think is a Christian, could not only make a good 'Christian' movie, but also blow the movies made by actual Christians away. Robert Duvall, who wrote, produced, and directed this movie, is a wonderfully complex character that is often overlooked in Christian films. In the discussion last night after the movie, Christians rarely create a complex, three-dimensional protagonist. Their characters are either saints all the way through, or they have a moment of catharsis and never fail again. Duvall's character, Sunny, fails multiple times in the movie. He unintentionally kills his wife's lover, he gets drunk, he still has problems with womanizing, and he beats up a man who insults the black people in his church. You never see these kinds of people in Christian films.
    Another point that came up in the discussion is that God doesn't wait for you to get rid of all your sin before He can use you. In the movie, Sunny is used by God with wondrous results, even though Sunny still struggles with his sin.
    For those who missed the movie last night, you missed a great experience.
