an MK's perspective on the apostle
so yes.. i'm cashing in on the double points for posting on this movie... :)
One thing that stood out to me from this film was its similarity to The Fidge, in that it made me feel uncomfortable. Being an MK from the New Tribes Mission regime (ok, I'm being silly), I have grown up with the idea that there is a "right" way to evangelize and teach people in the truth, and let me tell you, Sonny's way was not right! Sometimes I felt like I needed to cover my eyes as I watched this messed-up guy do things like emotionally trip people into becoming christians. What would happen to these people being led by such a person? Watching Sonny's new congrigation sing a hymn (i think it was "There's power in the blood" or something like that) as Sonny beat up a man just outside the church sent chills down my spine.
However, this movie did lead me to think more deeply about the concept that God can use even really messed up and confused people to achieve His purpose. I believe that God can do that, but I have also seen and heard about so many people groups that have gotten the wrong idea of christianity because of false teaching, leading to major synchratism with old beliefs. And yet, I'm sure God can certainly use even misguided Christian teaching to begin His work in people. I mean, it's not like any one of us can be certain that we are right about everything about God. I don't know, just stuff I'm still thinking about...
