Prof. Leeper showed us a clip from the Marx brothers fifth movie with the brothers performing their hat routine. This is just one of several hilarious routines the Marx's perform in this movie.
Duck Soup is considered by many to be their best film and I'm inclined to agree. The movie is a riotously funny movie and if there was any film comedy the whole class should have to watch, it would be this one.
It's such a shame that most comedies today are crude, profane, and sexually perverted. Where have all the good comedies gone? What happened to the Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Marx brother style of humor? That stuff was great! This is how I would make my movies if they had comedy content.
I would encourage everyone to watch this movie when they can get around to it. The best part is the mirror sequence.
Groucho Marx: Will you marry me? Did your husband leave you any money? Answer the second question first. L.O.L.

I really did my best to make it though Duck Soup. Some of the jokes I found really funny, but it just wasn't clicking with me for some reason. Maybe there were just too many being thrown at me all at once. As Groucho said into the camera, "They can't all be winners, folks." I might try again eventually.
ReplyDeleteI think you have to have a certain type of humor to like the Marx bros. My dad and I watch Marx bro's movies all the time. He laughs a lot, while I chuckle at various scenes. For me personally, slap-stick humor can be too quick to find hilarious. Like you said, I miss the comedy of the "golden age" of Hollywood too. And I agree, the mirror sequence is awesome. Harpo guest stars in an I Love Lucy episode and does the "mirror scene" with Lucy. It's so awesome!
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you here. The slapstick comedy of Buster Keaton and the Marx Bros. is indeed genius. Unfortunately today's Hollywood comedy consists of nothing but moronic out of context swearing. I am a huge fan of Buster Keaton, and I need to brush up on the Marx Bros. more.
