"We are born naked, wet, and hungry. Then things get worse."

Although I don't believe the quote above is entirely true, I saw it today on my stumble and it painted a nice picture of the human suffering that art is all about capturing. Life is packed full of tragedies and letdowns, and much of existence is spent suffering. To me, it is a constant flow of suffering that is broken up by the ever so precious and triumphant moment of temporary happiness. This can occur as often as possible--upon seeing family, an afternoon with friends, a nice book or film or even a cup of coffee. My take on the human struggle is that it is a constant fight against the overbearing shadow of suffering and searching for a purpose. If we can't fight this suffering with moments of happiness, we end up causing even more suffering for others, and it grows exponentially.

To me, this quote personified that idea pretty nicely and it all just hit me at once. Right from the get-go, we're naked, broke, hungry, wet; four things we try to avoid naturally. And yet, those moments of ignorance are the closest many people get to bliss their entire life. Some would argue that "bliss" by definition is not reachable with age. One could say it "all goes downhill from there".

So this was pretty stream-of-conscious -ish and I apologize for my rambling thoughts. Just one of those bursts. I'll probably read this in a minute and realize it looks ridiculous.
