Women in the Media
Usually, I find feminism somewhat obnoxious. I don't care if you say policeman instead of police person and I'm glad that as the weaker sex, I don't have to carry heavy things or be drafted into the military. I like that I don't have to pay on dates and that if I want to be the main provider of my family, I can be. But lately, few things especially present in media have disturbed me. Any movie or story with a female as the main character is almost automatically written off as just for girls. Ask yourself, would Harry Potter have been half as popular as it is if the main character was a girl? Even if there are guys out there who like stories with female protagonists, how often do they admit it? It's something that they can be ashamed of. That's so weird to me. Like, if any of you have ever watched Gilmore Girls, it's and extremely clever and well written television show; very funny, very smart, but i only know of one guy who has ever admitted to liking it. Because the two main characters are girls and it has girls in the title. It's the same with music. It's okay for girls to like music with both male or female main vocals, but guys generally only like music in which a male is most prevalent. I've met several people in the last month who have told me that I'm wrong just because I'm a girl. Where do you think they got that?

ReplyDeleteI think this might be the problem of female characters in "girl" films. Maybe the characters and the situations don't appeal to guys. I guess girls can find something in "guy" entertainment, but it's harder to find "girl" entertainment that pleases guys. For my part, every "girl" movie I've had the misfortune of seeing was focused on gossiping, clothes shopping, trying to get a guy, makeup, etc.
ReplyDeleteI think today, "girl" movies are made for and marketed to girls only. That's probably why "guy" movies have higher appeal. They evidently appeal to girls too.
Now I don't 100% hate girl movies. Obviously, I hate the ditzes and drama queens one sees in most "girl" movies, and I don't really like the male arm-ornament girls in "guy" entertainment. (Granted, I find many of the men in "guy" movies just as shallow.)
However, I do really like the female main character in "True Grit." I think she was one of the best female characters to even appear on screen.
I really enjoyed that trailer! It's so upsetting how women are portrayed in the media. It's very degrading to women everywhere. No wonder it's so hard for women in politics (or in any leadership job) to be taken seriously.
ReplyDeleteI admit to liking Gilmore girls! I try to be different then most guys in my approach to media. Who cares if girls are the main characters guys! Stupid stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteAlso I don't like the title "chick flick", it's romantic comedy! if you love film, you love all types of movies.
ReplyDeleteThank you Stephen, for introducing another piece of the puzzle. Read this article: http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-obnoxious-assumptions-hollywood-makes-about-women/
ReplyDeleteplease see assumption #1
ReplyDeleteI read the article. Humorous and very insightful. If I wasn't clear, I was complaining about some of that stuff in my earlier comment. Those are the reasons I don't care for very many "girl" movies. The characters act like those in the article.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to take up more space but I forgot to write this part. As far as the shopping is concerned, I don't think that shopping is dumb female habit. I was saying that a movie about a girls shopping isn't going to interest guys very much. I was merely commenting on a probable reason why girls will go to "guy" movies, but guys won't go to "girl" movies.
ReplyDeleteThat video made me laugh and wince at the same time during different moments. It amazes me the things people will actually say on TV.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, this is one of the reasons I love how nerd culture has become a popular thing. The smarter and more capable of engaging you intellectually they are the hotter the nerd girl is.
