It's the apocolypse; Lindsey is defending Twilight as "not that bad"

I went to see the new twilight movie with my mom on Friday; we read all the books together and have seen all the movies so far together. It's much more of an I-like-hanging-out-with-my-mom thing than an Oh-Twilight-is-the-best thing, but I find it so funny how offensively horrible some people find it. Yeah, Meyer needs help with her writing; her main character's thoughts drone on and contradict themselves, and yes, Bella is not the strongest badass female character, but let's just compare it to some things. And I can't believe that this is happening, but I am going to defend Twilight, because I think it gets more hate than it deserves.
I cannot excuse the writing. If you want examples on the many many errors and the author's love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with the English language, look up "Reasoning with vampires." Someone takes the time to read the books and find every little tiny mishap to critique (which is, in my opinion, way more effort than someone should put into hating a silly little teen novel.) But, you know what, somehow, despite her lack of finesse in writing, the author is now a millionaire because of these books. No matter how stupid you think the story is, she has taken an idea about sparkly vampires and made it into bountiful liquid assets.
Now, onto Bella/Kristen Stewart; though we will begin with Bella. Everyone hates her and thinks she is a huge hit to feminism because she just shut down when Edward left and she supposedly would never see him again (first world problems, am I right?) but let's be honest- the main idea of the book is that this is a love story. They love each other. That's its thing. I've never heard anyone say "Juliet set feminism back like 200 years because she killed herself just because Romeo was dead." Obviously, Edward wasn't dead and Twilight is not even in the same category as Twilight, but do you get what I'm saying? Bella's character is not defined by bravery or strength; it's by attracting weird magical creatures. It's by loving Edward and/or Jacob. And having that badass clunky truck and looking hot without trying. And being pale and clumsy. Plus, she chose like the only guy in the world who would never ask her to make him a sandwich. That is feminism if I have ever heard it. Their kitchen would just be decoration. I just think she generates more hate than she deserves. Like "Oh Jeez, she was really sad for a few months because her immortal boyfriend ditched her." Once I was sad for like a year that a boy i liked and almost kind of dated went back to his old girlfriend. I wrote songs people. If I had a book written about me at that time, it would not have been the shining beacon of feminism. Once I cried because my fish died. But the problem is that feminist views just frown upon ever giving anything up for love. What they really should frown upon is the idea that you need to make a certain choice in order to please any faceless group of people. Just because you aren't all old-fashioned and feeble and incapable of doing anything without a man doesn't mean that if the person you love leaves you should be like "Whatevs, since I don't need him, there's no point. Guess I'll go chop down some trees and make my own house."
Second, Bella really isn't that spineless. Examples: she is being hunted by this mean vampire who wants to eat her or whatever and her first thought is keeping her father safe. Edward says no, he's trying to protect her, which she is annoyed by and she stands up to him and does whatever she needs to do to protect the people she loves. Even though half the time, they aren't even people. She does that a lot; goes out of her way to protect loved ones and stands up to Edward (who can be quite the bossy little bitch.) She may not be the best at protecting people, and she almost always gets herself hurt, but she keeps trying to protect the people she loves. She can be stupid about it, but so can Harry Potter. That was painful to write "Harry Potter" as some sort of comparison to Twilight. I love Harry Potter like crazy, and Harry Potter is better in like every facet, but we're talking about how Twilight isn't "that bad," so I digress.
People hate on Kristen Stewart a lot too. Because she doesn't smile. Why does anyone care whether or not she smiles? There are plenty of male celebrities who don't smile on the red carpet... oooooh, yeah, it's because she's a girl so she definitely should be all bubbly and sweet and princessy all the time. Plus, I've seen a few photo shoots of her recently where her face shows quite the range of emotion, oh, and I've seen some from way earlier and all the time in between like that too. She does smile, but it's not enough so obviously she sucks and everyone should make fun of how she's not peppy enough.
Finally, in my lifetime, there have been three book series for children/young adults that have really broken out and they are all written by women; Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games. Twilight is still the weakest of the three, but still, kids are reading and some women are doing great things in writing. Even if you don't like Twilight, it just doesn't make sense to me to hate it. Just don't care if you don't care. That's fine. I just think there are more important things to hate and that just saying "Twilight is gay" is inaccurate because all the relationships in the series are heterosexual. Don't waste your energy hating it. It's not worth it because Twilight is really not that bad. It's not great; it's not really even good. But it is not evil or anything so just cut it some slack, that's all I'm saying.
Unless someone likes Twilight but doesn't like Harry Potter because then you should beat their ass down.
