Again, this is a film I have mixed feelings about. I actually loved it when it first came out. However, repeated viewings showed me the many flaws in this film, especially compared to the first two. I still do like it okay, just not nearly as much as I first did.
I found the drama in this film to be poorly written and somewhat stale compared to the first two. Maybe it was because Sam Raimi decided to write this film as well was direct it. If this film is any indication, he should stick to directing. A good portion of the dialogue is terrible and it looks like the performances are strained from having to say such stupid lines. Nicolas Cage is the only actor I know of who can deliver bad dialogue well and the only good writer/directors I know of are the Coen brothers and Christopher Nolan.
Getting back to the movie, I was actually excited to hear Venom was going to show in this film. Even though I really don't read comic books, Venom always looked cool to me.
But he was banished to the climax! And while visually he looked great, they kept showing Eddie Brock's face and spoiling it all. And of course, Venom says the worst line I have ever heard come from a villains mouth!
"I like being bad. It makes me happy."
What...the...heck? A person can act like that but they don't say it!
Another problem I had with the movie, aside from the bad lines and campy drama, was the symbiote. Sure, that thing in and of itself was pretty cool, but the way it made Peter act was so bad. I actually read a junior novel of Spider-Man 3 before I saw the movie and it made the symbiote seem more like the ring from The Lord of the Rings. It was like a drug Peter was addicted to and it made him more violent and unrestrained. They did this in the movie as well, but it lost all momentum when I watched it make Peter dance around New York like some kind of eemo stoned on ecstasy. Seriously, if you saw only the eemo-Peter scenes, would you ever guess they were from a Spider-Man movie? Especially after seeing the first two? Those where some of the dumbest scenes I have ever seen on film and that's saying something!
Aside from that, there were just too many characters and too many plot lines. If Raimi had kept it simpler, and took out the goth-Peter parts, this might have been better.
Final Thoughts:
Bad dialogue, stupid moments, campy drama=bad, stupid, campy movie.
I was going to comment, but it would result in a tirade of how this is one of the worst movies ever.
ReplyDeleteActually, no it wouldn't. That's sort of the trouble with blogging, it sounds like I'm yelling my hatred for the film. If I were to do a video review, it would be more composed and me simply pointing out flaws in the film. I don't think this is the worst movie ever (I've seen far worse), and I actually wouldn't mind feedback. As Leeper says, this is a conversation. I'll try to make by blogs sound less like a tirade next time.
