Now let's continue.
8: Batman
I think the reason I didn't like this movie was because I saw Batman Begins and The Dark Knight first. Actually the first Batman media I ever saw was the 60s TV show, of which I was a diehard fan. At the time, I knew next to nothing about Batman so the TV series was a blast for me. Eventually, it stopped playing (or rerunning) on TV so I lost interest in Batman for a while aside from picking up a few comics. Then I saw Chris Nolan's versions and they blew me away. After seeing both Nolan's films, my curiosity was peaked about the 90s versions. Needless to say, none of them were good in my opinion. While the hero's were okay in terms of portrayal, the villains were awful. Maybe it's just me, but when the hero is a serious character that we're supposed to take as a real person and then the bad guy acts like a nutball, the clash just doesn't seem to work. That was the problem with all the 90s versions of Batman.
Getting more to this film, I actually found it more silly than the 60s show because this was trying to be serious while the TV show was simply younger kids entertainment. A lot of the elements in this film just didn't go well together. As for the characters, I found Michael Keaton to be pretty bland as Batman. He wasn't awful or anything, he just wasn't that interesting. And I personally didn't think he fit the bat-suit very well. I mean, he looks like he's puckering up.

Give us a big, wet Bat-kiss! |
The leading lady in this film, Vicki Vale kind of got on my nerves. Again, she wasn't bad and actually had a bit of a character going for her. I just wish her secondary language wasn't screaming. And she just seemed to be more the stereotypical damsel in distress instead of a three-dimensional character.
My last complaint for this movie was the landscape. It was terrible. All the buildings were all weird and bent out of shape. It look nothing like a city and a lot like some kind of hallucination. Joel Schumacher's version of the city was even worse.
In general, the film was just too silly to take seriously even though it tried to be serious. Only half of the movie (when the good guys were on screen) really succeeded as being okay entertainment.
Final Thoughts:
Kiss my bat you silly movie!

ReplyDeletebat nipples who's idea was that, prolly the same guy who thought Clooney and Schwarzenegger were a good idea.
That is all
I never had a problem with this movie until I realized the inconsistent logic. Batman is a murdering psychopath in this one. And then if you watch the second one you realize he's also an elitist. End of the movie he scolds catwoman for wanting to kill the bad guy...even though Batman has been doing nothing but killing everyone he sees. The difference...this bad guy is rich.
ReplyDeleteOne other reason not to like these films. Anyone who knows anything about Batman knows that his number one rule is to never kill.
