The Apostle

I wasn't initially very excited to see The Apostle because it hadn't sounded very interesting to me, but I went because I trusted Professor Leeper when he talked about how great it was. Boy am I glad I went. I had originally anticipated a movie similar to those made by Sherwood Baptist. Thankfully that wasn't what I got. As Miles pointed out in the discussion afterwards, if The Apostle had been made by Sherwood Pictures, Sonny would have been a very different character. He would have either been near flawless from the start, or a complete mess till he meets Jesus and then he becomes flawless. Thats great for us to strive to be flawless but it isn't reality. The Bible makes it clear that our lives as Christians won't be easy. Robert Duvall did a good job of balancing a character who has been changed by Christ, but who also has very real struggles with his church, women and the law. I really enjoyed watching Sonny's transformation from a pastor who wants the Church to be his, to a pastor who wants the Church to be totally God's. I loved how Professor Leeper pointed out that the church didn't skip a beat when Sonny was arrested, something I hadn't really noticed.
All in all I really liked The Apostle and hope to watch it again soon.
