A couple of weeks ago Jonathan Scales, Kevin Turner and I made a list of movies we wanted to watch together this semester. The only movies allowed are movies at least one of us has not seen. One of the original movies we put on our list was 'The Secret of NIMH'. Jonathan suggested this one. Having not seen it I was so excited. I remember seeing previews for this movie when I was younger, but never got a chance to see it. Right when it was put on the list I wanted to watch it right then and there, but it wasn't until a few days later we dived into the fantastic animated film, 'The Secret of NIMH'.
Directed and adapted for screen by Don Bluth, 'The Secret of NIMH' is a story about a field mouse. The field mouses son is ill and the mouse must seek the aid of a colony of super-intelligent rats. The mouse has a connection with the rats that is yet to be discovered.
'The Secret of NIMH' is a film that will be most appreciated by adults, but should be shown to every young child at least some point in there young life. This story has a great sense of mystery, magic, thrill and wonder. After watching this film I wanted to watch it again. I wanted to just dive into the story and soak it up all over again. I wanted to read into the story and experience something new the second time. (This same feeling has occurred with two other movies recently, including 'Last Night' and 'Contagion'. These three films just left me wanting more.) Played out with gorgeous animation and voice acting, 'The Secret of NIMH' is not to be missed.
Nihm is Bluth's first and best. Great choice!
