By and large, this movie was one of the better ones we've seen so far at Signs and Wonders. It harkens back to the Golden Age of films and reminded me very much of several of Frank Capra's movies, especially Mr. Deeds goes to Town.
Now I'm a sucker for humor (the clean kind anyway), so maybe I can overlook a few things in the film. I loved the weird characterizations, and high-speed conversations, and all the goofball humor. I actually found the characters more appealing because they were so over-the-top. If they had been played straight, the movie might have been much slower and not nearly as much fun.
I still don't know how I feel about the ending though. I won't spoil it, but I will say it was one of the weirdest endings I've ever seen in my life. I guess it felt like the film was cheating. The humor with which it was executed helped a lot.
I also liked the message of losing yourself in success and then, in a moment of self-reflection, you realize your life hasn't amounted to much. The main character temporarily loses sight of why he invents the things he invents (you know, for kids) in the first place. He did it because he wanted to bring joy into their lives.
Overall, a worthwhile film. I can't wait for the next two movies, Dead Man Walking and Winter's Bone.
