The Hobbit

I'm not sure how many of you are are interested in or following the news on the upcoming Hobbit films, but words can barely describe how excited I am for these movies. People who have seen footage already have made comments to the extent of "the Hobbit films could possibly surpass the Lord of the Rings trilogy". Which would be absolutely incredible.

Probably the biggest buzz around the movies right now is the filming style: 48 fps in 3D. I've never really been a fan of 3D, but I am definitely going to give the Hobbit a shot in 3D. The techniques they are using are incredible and hopefully this will be the current pinnacle of 3D technology. The Hobbit's film set has 48 RED Epic cameras! And they have utilized them for use on cranes, dollies, steadicams, and handheld use. All with 3D capabilities as well. In the end, they are essentially able to film the same way they would with 2D cameras. Because they have to place the cameras so close together for the 3D effect and the cameras are so large, they are using mirrors to create the 3D effect. Also, they are even making the storyboards 3D, with a blue and a red copy!

And being 48 fps, it will look so much more lifelike on the screen, as opposed to the standard 24 fps for films. When they have shown preview footage, people who watched it said that because of the realistic looking 48 fps and 3D, it looks like a hole was cut into the back of the theater and you are looking out.
They still have a lot of filming to do, but now they are finishing up the studio sets and moving out to locations in New Zealand.


Needless to say, I am super freakin' pumped!
