The Host

At last, the first good monster movie I've seen in a long time. Characters I actually cared about, a story I was invested in, and far more to the movie than just the usual hollywood monster shock and awe. The film actually used a social commentary to add further depth to the story much like George Romero did with his zombie movies in the 60s. (I don't agree with Romero's commentaries but at least they added some depth). I won't spoil the film, given it's a scary movie and spoilers usually ruin scary movies. A few people screamed while watching it.
P.S. I didn't scream. I don't scream in scary movies. I just say to myself, "You moron, run!" or, "You idiot, don't go in there!"
The reason this movie was so effective with it's suspense is the same reason the TV show "Lost" was so good. I couldn't predict the film and where the story was going to go. So I was along for the ride and not outside the movie making critiques.  I was also amazed at how the CGI here was so much better than many hollywood movies, even though hollywood has much more money to devote to their CGI.
Long story short, it was the best monster movie I've seen since "Jurassic Park." I would actually disagree with Leeper's comments on "Jurassic Park" being just a roller coaster ride. The film's message was about human beings playing God with their science and how it can backfire on us. In the film, man's crowing scientific achievement (making dinosaurs) runs amok and causes all sorts of problems. Is "Jurassic Park" as deep as "The Host?" No, but I liked both of them.
Besides, I've been in love with that T-Rex since I was five.

  1. Well, being the skeptic that I am about a lot of modern films, I have a hard time seeing decent CGI. The trailers never really seemed to get me interested, but perhaps I'll give it a shot sometime.
