I believe that when Gene Roddenberry created the Star Trek series, The Original Series was just the warm up to The Next Generation: the storyline that best described his vision. The earth is unified; wars, disease, and poverty have ended. Hundreds of planets are in league together working for the benefit of all life forms. And then you have the crew of the Enterprise, no less determined to boldly go where no one has gone before. I absolutely love the dynamics between the crew members. They have plenty of differences that can keep them going at each other, but when it comes down to it, they care about each other on more than a professional level; they're a family. They were explorers, fearlessly venturing into the unknown. There was no certainty about their lives, but it was an adventure and they pressed on.
It seems that today that much of the mystery in life is taken away by technological and scientific advances; it's just really appealing to imagine a future where fantastic advances in culture, medicine, and technology exist, but there's still a sense of wonder to what's out there. And while they may not understand what they're dealing with or know where they're going, they'll fearlessly discover such things for themselves.
